West Hawaii... Mahalo

Grandma 1986 came to see how I’m doing with roasting. she says she misses roasting so i give her the wooden spoon that grandpa made for her 1970 she needed a new spoon. Thats the spoon i learned how to roast with and the roasting pot. she starts to turn the coffee around and say, "ah i still know how". and laugh. then we talk about the coffees available in the storage and other things like getting ready to harvest. then she goes about reinforcing the privilege that she has passed on to me from generations ago. " Out of all my grandchildren make sure you take care of our coffee tradition and family history as it is a means of a living to care for your family with selling it not trading it like they all did the generations before but trade if need."  When i was 16 grandma said, " Alvin, you are the one to take care of our coffee tradition that we have done for generations and keep the  history stories and tell them to our family and others, i said, "yes i know and reminded her that the coffee house will be a great place for me to use my ideas for the coffee as a modern-day place for people to get the coffee and share the taste that still is a labor of love and your stories. my mom was out there with us and said "oh wait i will get my camera and take a picture of you guys roasting no one ever had a photo roasting with grandma before and so much better it's with the next generation that is in charge of the coffee." " Now we have this memory in a photo and another family story." At this time i was 21 and again she gave me the privilege to be In-charge of this family tradition. when i was 16 and she reminded me every time that i seen her as we spend time talking stories of the new and any that we feel like about the past stories in this now 8 generation of tradition the stories that would pass on as i would pass on to another generation when i retire like her. like here picking on who fits the position respectfully with their standards. my grandpa and grandpa always were right there with us talking and remembering the stories of her them and the other generations before. so much more to say. My grandma & grandpa was as the bible says ONE, and let no man separate them. 76 years married.
